Inexpensive Firearms...

I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive rifle or shotgun.
(If one exists anymore)

Nothing Fancy, perhaps a .223, .243, 30-06 rifle or a 12 or 20
ga shotgun. I only have $150.00 - $250.00 FRNS to spend. Any
ideas where to find something like this? We have a local outdoors
store, Gander Mountain, but they tend to sodomize you on all of
their New and Used guns.

Perhaps all I can afford in that price range is the Walmart
Special .22LR???

Any ideas would be appreciated.

12 ga. Remington Model 870 pump. They are affordable and easy to modify. I've had mine for 16 years and haven't had a problem with it yet.

Approx $650.00 new. Do you know of a place online that sells used?

Try a pawnshop.

You can get an SKS and some ammo in your price range. It's good on badguys and deer. If you don't mind a bolt action Mosins are good and cheap. too. Heck. you can afford a Mosin and a Nagant pistol... just feed the Nagant .32mag instead of its normal round. You could probably get a single shot 12 gauge instead of the pistol.

If you got a Mosin carbine and Nagant revolver you could probably even still afford a steel rifle plate for armor. Now that's really stretching your tactical dollar!

Can't go wrong with an 870. Big 5 occassionally has Remington 870's on sale that beat the MSRP significantly.

SKS - Russian made perhaps. Stay away from the Chinese ones.

For 250.00 that should buy you some 7.62 ammo as well

Thats a great idea

I'll have to try and locate a pawn shop in town. I don't know of any off hand.

I didn't even think of that. :banghead:

A yugo sks is about $278 in my town at the moment. It is crude and heavy like a big ak or something, but sort of neat looking. I have never shot one before. I have 2 upgraded 870s that I paid $270 each for used last month. You just have to check the shops.

Jesus! I haven't priced one in a while. When I got mine 16 years ago, they were still around the $200-250 range new. Damn, inflation's a bitch! I only paid $2.00 for mine. I won it in a raffle at a hunting club pic-nic. Best 2 bucks I ever spent.

Actually, they are great guns as well. I have one in 20 ga. break open barrel. It's a little short for me, but I'm dead on when shooting clays with it. Very well balanced.

I agree that the SKS is probably the best deal. I've got a Yugo which I bought a couple years ago for $125 - it's built like a tank and is sufficiently accurate. I also have a Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine, got that one plus 60 rounds of non-corrosive ammo for about $115, just a couple of weeks ago.

I recommend that the original poster get one or the other of the above rifles. They will both put a good sized hole in whatever you are shooting at. SKS gives you more capacity and rate of fire, but less power. Also get lots of ammo, but if you run out, you can "fix bayonets"! ;)

Re: Inexpensive Firearms...

I would make the rounds of the Pawnbrokers.

A Marlin 336 in .30-30 would be a good rifle, that you could find for under $200 used. You might find a Remington 700 adl or bdl with a scope for $250.

Mossberg pump, Winchester 120Ranger, or Rem 870Express would be a good choice for a shotgun, a plain barrel that you could cut with a hacksaw or pipe-cutter will be cheapest and be a good in-close weapon.

A lever action .30-30 is about as close to an assault rifle as you will find. .30-30 is more powerful than the russian, you can reload the cases, you can easily scope a Marlin since they have a flat top receiver.

A single shot NEF is not a good buy.

At a pawn shop, you can make a real low-ball offer and see if the guy will play ball. Often, they just want to get their loan money back so they can loan it out again at 15% per MONTH! Those guys don't make their dough selling items they have to take posession on. Likely you will find many almost new rifles and scopes for sale. I would go scouting ASAP because hunting season coming into swing means they won't be having to bargain much; then again, they like everyone else are short of cash. Take CASH when you go and mention you are paying CASH. Make your offer and make them pay the taxes. Maybe you can get them to include some ammo too? Good luck.

Re: Inexpensive Firearms...

I've seen AK47's as low as $240, real beat up trade-in's or consignment, rough finish, terrible wood, still works fine though. But don't go blowing all the money on a gun if you can't buy ammo. The $10 left over in your budget would buy 40 bullets :D

Enfield, Mosin Nagant, Carcano, K-31, Mauser, any of the mil surp bolt actions would be better than nothing, shotgun ammo is pricey but can be easier to reload I guess. You can pick up a Lee Load-All press for like $40, its plastic and slow but works fine from what I've read.

A 9mm carbine like a Kel Tec Sub2000 would be real cool if you could find one used but not too beat up, get some 9mm SMG ammo, or some +P+ 115gr, a little heavier even maybe, and you've got yourself a maneater. Plus it folds and takes glock mags (there are others that take beretta mags and stuff too though)

If you know where to find ANY Rem 700 action for $250 WITH a scope, jump on it. A NEW Rem 700 is well over $500. Hell, the receiver ALONE is worth about $500 from Brownells (THE gunsmith's supply company).

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...CTION+RECEIVER

That link says $499. For the receiver. NOT a full firearm. So if you can find ANY used Rem 700 for $250, snap it up, cause that's a steal. The receiver is worth WAY more than that $250.

http://www.classicarms.us/

This site lists Mossberg Tactical for $270 and the Mossberg Persuader for $210 (near the top). They also have several choices in the 'cheap surplus' military bolt action rifles. Starting around $100 and go up from there.

Go to the 'Firearms page' and you will find: Nagant rifle start at $70. Yugo SKS start at $170. You can pick up a CZ52 pistol for about $140.

A place to start.

I can't help you with gun information, but need to ask several inexpensive gun questions,,,,,First, Topper model 158,single shot. Has a rifle barrel with 80-80 win on the side of it...I bought it at a yard sale recently for $10, have been meaning to visit a gun shop to find out how to care for it..Some rust etc. Haven't figured out 80-80 win.Nothing comes up in the search engines.. Then the other is a 9mm Hi Point carbine..Would this be a good property gun to get and back up with a pistol of the same caliber.I got some ammunition at the same yard sale,,figured either sell it, or get a gun to put it in? An apology for my lack of knowledge,, I visit this site to hit the economic news, and some of the posts suggest tha future may not be as polite as the past..

Use a magnifying glass and look at the Topper. I bet it says 30-30 win. Easy to find ammo. You got a hell of a good deal, that's a $100 rifle!.

What he said! Now go buy bullets and a good cleaning kit and a Lee loader. Save your brass and learn to reload. A single shot 30-30 can shoot spire (pointed) bullets which doesn't hurt performance at all.

Re: Inexpensive Firearms...

If you are going to purposely go with a single shot, why not a Thompson Contender? Interchangeable barrels, 10 or 14" length, easy to scope, easy to pack? Yes, a .30-30 that is not tube magazine can use spire point bullets, good point. You can also single-load them, or consider Hornady's bullet that has a soft-tip for tube mag use.

You might find a Remington bolt action and detachable mag in .30-30. These were fairly cheap in their day. A Savage 99 is also a good choice since it has a lever with a box magazine.

Wallew, you never find the deals unless you look. I bought 2 Like New 700s in the past year with a leupold and Burris scope. One was $285 the other was $365, not bad considering the Signature scope and VX-II were included. Lots of hardly fired rifles wind up at pawnshops.

There is somewhat of a cult following around the single shot NEF rifles. I would NOT buy one as anything other than a gun you could leave behind the door, just so you had something more than a rock or a sharp stick. A Ruger #1 is a nice rifle. I've shot them, but having to hold spare ctgs between your fingers as you fire one off to be ready with a follow up is nothing more than hamstringing yourself.

A Winchester 670 or Remington 710 is also an option. These were less expensive versions of the model 70 and 700 rifles and use the same basic action. You can often find Savage 110s very cheap, and Savage has a real following these days. I saw a guy post on 24hr Campfire that WalMart in Denver was closing out Rem 700 adl rifles for $225; so you never know. Maybe K-Mart has a special?

Saiga. Saiga. Saiga. Get it from www.rrarms.com. Choose .223, 7.62x39, or 12-gauge. Only $250 for AK caliber 7.62x39.

Re: Inexpensive Firearms...

MM,
Those are screaming deals. The glass alone is worth what you paid. So you basically got TWO rifles for free. Not too shabby.

Yeah, but you ALSO have to live in an area where the shops and gun shows are NOT scoured by poor gunsmithing students. As the school is IN Denver, we don't have many opportunitys like that around here.

After ten years of guns, guns and more guns, I finally sold most of my collection and retired. I stopped going to gun shows. That one was a toughy. I LIKE gun shows. I was known and knew MOST of the 'usual suspects' that haunt gun shows. But after spending at least two weekends every month at gun shows (behind the table) for more than five years I finally gave that up also.

You are correct. You have to 'be out there' to find those kinds of deals. Kudos. Great score on some really fine rifles and glass.

I bought them already modded. They both have customized barrels of some sort. One with rails and another has some strange suppressor drilling in the barrel tip.

One of them has a metal side folding stock which I find really nice.

You can get dirt cheap ammo for the Russian M-44's at ammuntiontogo.com. The rifle is $80-$120 per rifle. You will want to leave some cash for ammo or you will end up with just another club. The SKS is always a good idea also.

I beleive the second one is made in China (hence the price) so I would immediately expect the quality to be low. If I had to trust either one of these with my life I'd go for the Mossberg.

Got an 870 and a 500....like 'em both....but my Remington is for duck hunting and the Mossberg is what is behind the bedroom door with 00 buck.

I like the thumb on top of stock slide safety of the Mossberg better....."forward to fire"....easy to remember, unlike trigger button on the 870 (OK...WHICH way is the red showing ?? ) or the selector switch on an AR-15 which must be flipped from the "forward is safe" ( 9 o'clock ) position to the "straight up to fire" ( 12 o'clock ) position....

Simple is ALWAYS better in a stressful situation IMHO.....which is why I like Glock pistols. ( No safety to flip ) Simple minds require simple tools. :D

Thank you, I am going to get the single shot Topper sorted out this weekend first.....There were two barrels .One was a 20 guage shotgun barrel. that was in/on ? the gun..Friend gave me five shells.Put one in and fired...Damn gun broke open, shell comes flying back faster than a bat outta Hell..You would assume something wrong?????? Broke gun apart and the pin that holds barrel in(?) was bent and soldered in brass...Haven't thrown it away yet.. Regarding caliber, there was a junk box, and several 30 cal shells , no lead, red concave surface which I assume to be tracers. They fit,,Was in house, and thinkig, "You idiot, just what you need, slam a tracer into the wall".......Pin on this one is good, tight fit...I'll buy some shells, go into the woods, and duct tape it to a tree, get around other side and pull trigger????? At 70 recoil is a prime consideration..Going back to Hi Point, recoil is reasonable, Topper is quite light, the recoil should be much more pronounced? Thanks for the help, a lot more questions now, before really didn't know enough to know what questions to ask..Search engine will have its boiler primed shortly.. Thank you again...N

Seems to me that 20ga barrel problem sounds easy to fix. I would think any handy gunsmith or welding shop could take care of it for a few bucks. While a single-shot anything isn't the end all be all of tactical assault blasterizers there is something to be said for a lightweight, easy to carry foraging gun.

Recommend Mossberg 12 ga. Model A. Very sturdy, I've never had a problem in
several years of operation with mine....cheap too....$100-$200 at a pawnshop.
Field-stripping it isn't quite as easy as other weapons though.

You can pick up pistol grips (if that's your gig) from Cabella's or elsewhere which turn it into a nice home defense unit.
